Dr. Steven Siepser

Introduction

Dr. Steven Siepser is known in the local community as a superior surgeon with extensive experience in premium patient care. But what you might not know is that Dr. Siepser is a nationally and internationally recognized opinion leader in the medical community. A pioneer on a number of fronts, Dr. Siepser has served as a prime investigator for many lasers, diagnostic devices and lenses now used for vision correction and various eye surgeries. Dr. Siepser is certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology, American Board of Surgery, and is a fellow of the American College of Surgery (FACS).

During the initial introduction of LASIK to the United States, many physicians used mobile lasers. They were not committed to owning one. Dr. Siepser, however, saw the clinical value of purchasing a laser to far outweigh financial concerns. He became the first ophthalmologist in the Delaware Valley to own a VISX excimer laser. He is now also the first and only surgeon in the region to own the Ziemer Femtosecond laser. This unique combination of lasers allows patients to have a custom wavefront guided "blade free" LASIK procedure.  For Dr. Siepser and his trained refractive team, being able to maintain quality controls by owning and operating these lasers gave them the confidence to assure patients they are in the best of hands. Both lasers remain stationary in a temperature and humidity controlled surgical suite in Siepser Laser Eyecare’s Wayne office.   For patients seeking LASIK vision correction, they have the convenience of getting their complete diagnostic work up and LASIK surgery in the same location. They can even watch a live procedure through glass windows which sometimes serves to allay any apprehensions. Owning a laser is an important component to insure superior LASIK vision outcomes.

Refractive Surgery Alliance

Dr. Siepser is a member of the esteemed Refractive Surgery Alliance (RSA). The RSA is a distinguished group of ophthalmologists specializing in refractive surgery.  Refractive surgery requires skills that go beyond general ophthalmology. The Alliance is composed of board certified/eligible ophthalmologists who have a special interest in refractive surgery, are leaders in their field and have been selected and approved by the Executive Board.

An objective of the Refractive Surgery Alliance is to help patients gain access to quality refractive surgery and provide education to reduce misinformation.  It aims to improve the safe delivery of refractive surgery worldwide.  Raising the number of well-trained refractive surgeons will, in turn increase the procedure’s success.

Innovation

It's easy to say you are an innovator, but Dr. Siepser can actually back this up. The Siepser sliding Knot, a unique procedure created by Dr. Siepser, is used worldwide by ophthalmic surgeons in iris reconstruction. An inventor of six patented technologies, Dr. Siepser is sought after by many medical device companies to help design and develop their products. He continues to lecture and teach internationally and is often called to be an expert witness in court.

Specialties

Refractive and interventional vision correction, astigmatism correction, cataract and intraocular lens surgery, glaucoma treatments, secondary intraocular lens implants, corneal transplantation, reconstructive eye surgery and complications from trauma or prior eye surgery. He also has extensive experience in the management of dry eye in the surgical patient.

Outside The Office

It has always been an important component of Dr. Siepser’s life to serve humanitarian causes. He donates his professional expertise often and encourages his family to join him in those efforts. In 1981, Dr. Siepser and his wife travelled to the South Pacific for 3 months to volunteer in Pago Pago, America Samoa. He performed some of the most sophisticated eye operations in the history of the Territory, including 2 corneal transplants and an intraocular lens implant. These operations may have been the first of their kind performed on the small island. He lectured to local doctors and public health nurses on various eye medications and operative techniques and saw an average of 25 to 30 patients daily. Dr. Siepser also supervised updating the medical center’s operating room which needed equipment and support staff to perform complicated operations on a regular basis.
In 1983, Dr. Siepser and his wife spent a month in Haiti. As a volunteer surgeon with the American based Eye Care Haiti, he operated on serious cases of cataracts and glaucoma and did intraocular lens implantations. Conditions were primitive at Jacmel’s hospital but the need for eye care was great.

In 1998, Dr. Siepser brought his family to the Turks and Caicos Islands where everyone participated in running an eye clinic. During the 4 week stay, family members conducted screenings and refractions and Dr. Siepser did roughly 200 cataract surgeries.
When Dr. Siepser is not performing surgery or seeing patients in his office, he may be found donating his time in the community, horseback riding at his farm or participating in various educational and sporting events with his wife and children. An experienced airplane and helicopter pilot, Dr. Siepser can be found flying his Bonanza plane to attend speaking engagements, medical conventions or, when time permits, simply a nice vacation. Just as pilots must execute a series of pre-flight checklists and safety measures every time they fly, Dr. Siepser performs his own ‘pre-flight’ surgical checklist in the operating room for each and every procedure. It is one more reason to feel confident that you are in the skilled hands of an expert and caring surgeon.
