PKP - a full thickness of the cornea is removed and replaced with donor tissue.

Photo-Refractive Keratectomy (PRK)

PRK - a refractive surgical procedure that employs the excimer laser to reshape the corneal curvature after removing the epithelium.

Phakic

An eye with an intact natural crystalline lens.

Pseudophakia

The use of an intraocular lens to correct the vision or an aphakic patient.

Primary open

Angle glaucoma - described distinctly as a multifactorial optic neuropathy that is chronic and progressive with a characteristic acquired loss of optic nerve fibers.

Primary angle

Closure glaucoma - is defined as an occludable drainage angle and features indicating that trabecular obstruction by the peripheral iris has occurred (ie, peripheral anterior synechiae, increased IOP, lens opacities, excessive trabecular pigmentation deposits). The term glaucoma is added if glaucomatous optic neuropathy is present.

Posterior Segement

The rear portion of the eye; includes the vitreous and retina.

Proptosis

A condition characterized by a protruding eyeball; caused by an increase in volume of the orbital contents. Also called exophthalmos.

Pupil

The opening in the center of the iris that enlarges or dilates and reduces or constricts.

Presbyopia

The progressive loss of the accommodative ability of the lens, due to natural process of aging.

Punctum

The hole in the upper and lower eyelids through which tears exit the eye. In patients with dry eyes, temporary or permanent plugs may be inserted to help keep tears in the eye. Tears flow through the punctum to the nose, which is why people often experience a runny nose when crying.

Punctal Occlusion

Treatment for dry eye in which plugs are inserted into the punctum in order to retain lubricating tears naturally produced by the eye.
